Radiation Oncology
This medical specialty utilizes
radiation primarily in the management
of malignancies. The radiation can be delivered externally
with high-energy radiation therapy machines, such as
a linear accelerator, or internally by inserting radioactive materials
into various cavities or tissues of the body. To provide
optimal cancer care, a radiation oncologist works closely
with the patient's primary physician, surgeon and medical
oncologist, as well as a multidisciplinary team to offer
psychosocial support, nutritional guidance, spiritual counseling
and transportation as needed. Most treatments are completed
on an outpatient basis.
