Pulmonology
A pulmonologist evaluates and treats disorders involving
the lungs. These disorders include chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchitis,
lung cancer, pneumonia and other disorders of the lungs. These
physicians
perform invasive procedures including thoracenteses, bronchoscopies,
pleural biopsies, endotracheal intubation and chest tube thoracostomies. Ventilator
management is frequently done by pulmonary physicians. The specialty
requires board certification in internal medicine and a three-year fellowship
in pulmonary medicine.
